About iSober

iSober is a private eye-movement impairment screen for iPhone. It uses the iPhone TrueDepth camera to run an HGN-inspired eye-movement check.

iSober is not a breathalyzer. It does not estimate blood alcohol concentration. It is not a medical device, legal test, or safe-to-drive decision.

Device Requirements

iSober requires:

  • iPhone with a TrueDepth front camera
  • iOS 16 or later
  • Camera permission
  • Portrait orientation

The iOS simulator and unsupported devices may show a Face ID Required screen. This is expected.

How To Use iSober

  1. Open iSober.
  2. Grant camera permission.
  3. Confirm you are 21 or older.
  4. Read and accept the safety information.
  5. Choose Test a Friend or Test Myself.
  6. Complete calibration.
  7. Follow the dot with your eyes.
  8. Review the impairment signal and safety warning.

Test a Friend is the recommended mode because another person can hold the phone steady and keep the subject framed.

What Results Mean

iSober shows an impairment signal based on detected eye-movement clues.

Results are for informational screening only. A lower signal does not mean you are sober or safe to drive. If there is any chance you are impaired, do not drive.

Privacy

iSober runs eye tracking on your device. Raw camera video is not stored or uploaded. Test history is stored locally on your device unless you choose to share or copy a result.

Read the iSober Privacy Policy.

Troubleshooting

Camera permission was denied

Open iPhone Settings, find iSober, and allow Camera access.

The app says Face ID Required

iSober needs a TrueDepth front camera. Some iPhones, iPads, and simulators do not support the required face-tracking feature.

Calibration will not complete

Try these steps:

  • Improve lighting
  • Hold the phone at face height
  • Keep your face fully visible
  • Keep your head still
  • Stay within the distance guide
  • Use Test a Friend for better control

Results seem wrong

iSober is not a definitive impairment test. Eye movement can be affected by fatigue, medications, neurological conditions, lighting, camera position, and user movement. Do not rely on iSober to decide whether to drive.
