What Is Dessa AI? Block's Speech Model, Explained

Dessa is a voice AI that works with the sound of speech itself instead of turning it into text first. It comes from Block, Jack Dorsey's company behind Square and Cash App. Block says it hears tone and answers with tone, but you cannot buy it yet.
AI in Practice, Issue 1 · Voice AI. A plain guide to AI agents for clinics and service businesses.
Most AI that answers phones turns your caller's words into text, works out a reply, then reads it out in one flat voice. The tone is lost on the way. Block, the company behind Square and Cash App, has shown Dessa, a voice AI that works with the sound of speech itself instead of turning it into text first. So the tone survives.
What changed
Block says Dessa hears tone and answers with tone. For example, a caller who says “I need to see someone today” with a shake in their voice gets a calmer, warmer answer. Not the same flat reply as everyone else.

Why it matters
A patient who says “it's fine” but sounds in pain could be flagged as urgent. A homeowner with water coming through the ceiling could be marked for a fast callback. A caller who feels heard is more likely to book with you than call the next business.
What it cannot do yet
You cannot buy it: only a small group of safety researchers has access, and everyone else joins a waitlist. No one outside Block has tested it yet. And sounding human is not the same as being right: Block has not shown how often Dessa gets facts wrong.
One move you can make
Call the AI that answers your phone today, or the one you are thinking of buying, and check three things:
- How long does it pause before each answer?
- Can you interrupt it?
- Does it notice when you sound worried?
If your AI fails these checks, your callers have already noticed.
