Maine is a one-party consent state. It bars using an AI chatbot in trade with a consumer in a way that may mislead them into thinking it is human, unless they are clearly told; its effective date is unresolved.

This is a guide for clinic owners, not legal advice. Every line points to the law or the regulator's own page, checked on 2026-10-21. Where we could not confirm something, the page says so.
Under the statute below, the consent of one party to the call is enough. Federal law lets a party to a call record it, so the federal rule applies the same way here.
Maine has the closest general AI disclosure duty outside Utah, Texas and California. A person may not use an AI chatbot or any other computer technology to engage in trade and commerce with a consumer in a manner that may mislead or deceive a reasonable consumer into believing they are engaging with a human being, unless the consumer is notified in a clear and conspicuous manner that they are not. A violation is a violation of the Maine Unfair Trade Practices Act. A chatbot is defined as simulating human conversation through textual or aural communications, so a phone voice agent is in scope. The effective date is unresolved: secondary sources give 16 or 23 September 2025 and we did not retrieve the chaptered law.
We found no comprehensive consumer privacy law and no consumer health data law in force here. We checked secondary update lists, not the legislature's own search. A state medical records or professional confidentiality statute may also apply and was not searched. HIPAA still binds a covered clinic and its business associate vendor.
Maine bars using an automated telephone calling device or an artificial or prerecorded voice to make solicitation calls to listed numbers, including any residential telephone number and any paging or cellular phone within the State. It covers solicitation calls only. The federal rules on AI-voice calls and texts apply as well.
We found no statement from the Maine Board of Dental Practice on AI agents. Our check was a web search, not a search of the board's own site, so this is not proof of absence.
We found no adopted statement from the Maine Board of Licensure in Medicine on AI agents. Its Spring 2026 newsletter says it sits on the AI Workgroup subcommittee, and a Maine telehealth advisory group had launched a survey on how augmented intelligence is used in healthcare settings. There is no adopted board position yet.
The federal rule applies here; nothing specific to this place was found.
The ADA requires a public accommodation to provide effective real-time communication, including text telephones and FCC-approved relay systems. A clinic phone line answered by an AI agent must still work for a relay caller.
Aida opens every call with the recording notice your province or state needs, and says it is the practice's AI agent wherever you want it to. Request a demo with your clinic's rules in mind.
